Here’s a quick excerpt
In the past, laptop screen technology was CCFL, otherwise known as Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp. This essentially means the screen was ‘lit’ by small, thin fluorescent lamps similar to those found in offices. The different colours produced on screen were made by changes in power going to the LCD. This was all powered from an inverter – a small board of electronics regulating the power going to the LCD. This was quite power hungry though and drained quite a lot of power from the laptop battery meaning battery life was limited to an extent. A more power efficient method was welcomed.
